Mara Photographic Safaris- Is it for you?

We have been running safaris in Kenya for more than 30 years, and all our clients almost always return with their friends and family. This is a testimonial from John, one of our return clients.

“We've been with Brian on a safari six times since our initiation back in 2004.

I'll always remember the first time we saw Brian when he met us at Nairobi airport at the start of that trip. There he was, this genial weather-beaten silver bearded fellow in a worn out safari hat, arms out ready for a bear-hug of a welcome. We had no idea beforehand what he looked like, but there could be no mistake. He looked like a proper old-fashioned "Safari Man", and as we realised over the next few years, that's exactly what he is, through and through. This is his life, Kenya is his home, and because this is a relatively small and very personalised operation it matters hugely to him that you not only have a wonderful time but that you come back again! If you're going to entrust anyone with your precious safari experience, you won't go far wrong with Brian.

If your idea of a safari is a few days in a luxury lodge with little gift shops and a swimming pool, a fancy restaurant, two short game-drives per day and a whistle-stop dash to see the Big Five, then that's ok. It suits some people, even though it will cost you a near fortune. But if you want to really immerse yourself in the wildlife and have a truly worthwhile experience, then don't do that.

I won't go into the detail of the Safari's trips since there are lots of other reviews here which do that better than I could, and the fact that most of them are from repeat clients tells you a lot. What I can say is that you will never get closer to the wildlife, you will never have the chance to spend so many hours out in the bush, and you will never get as many opportunities to sit and watch situations develop. It's as far away from the typical 'tourist safari' experience as it gets.

It goes without saying that these are supreme wildlife viewing areas, whether Samburu, Nakuru or, in particular, the Masai Mara. For me as a photographer it has been heaven on each visit, and here I must make mention of one particular aspect of Freeman Safaris. I've been to many places around the world to capture wildlife images, but nowhere else have I benefited as much from the ability of the Freeman drivers, and the capabilities of their vehicles, to get me in the right place at the right time. Simply fabulous! Take a look at the vehicles on the website - absolutely the best for ease of photography and video, with almost unrestricted viewing angles.

It can be hard work at times, waiting for those wildebeest to charge across the river, for that leopard to climb down from its tree, for those cubs to come out. But if you're prepared to wait it out, you can. If you want to move on, you can. Your driver will within reason take you where you want to go, position the vehicle exactly as you want, and hang around as long as you want. If you are willing to put in the time and patience required you will usually be rewarded! I've not found this degree of flexibility anywhere else and it's a big reason why we wouldn't book with anyone else.

The tents and facilities are fine, you don't need a luxury lodge. In fact for me it all adds to the enjoyment. After a few days, when you have attuned to the rhythms of the bush, the camp and the wonderful night chorus, you will be truly immersed in the whole experience. And sitting around the camp fire with a Tusker beer, reflecting on the day - it just doesn't get any better.

So if you want what I would call a true safari experience then I wouldn't hesitate any longer.”

As we say, the wild is calling. Answer that call!!
